Back-to-School After Parents Separate is Daunting to Children
When recently faced with divorce, children are often nervous about going back-to-school and having to see old friends and tell them about what’s happened with their parents. In the little minds of theirs, they may fear being isolated and cut-off from their friends. They may feel as if they’re the only ones in school whose parents are getting divorced.
Experts tell us to tell your children’s teachers, counselors, and other influential caregivers about what’s happening at home. By giving them a heads-up, you’ll likely get them to give you some insight as to any changes in your children’s behavior.
Think about it this way: you and your spouse may be dividing assets and liabilities, working toward resolution on financial support, etc. but your children may be feeling fear, anxiety and shame. Our attorneys always recommend therapy – especially at such a critical time like back-to-school.
There is a silver lining in it all – children tend to adapt quickly, and once a few weeks go by, they’ll likely be into their new routine and life will continue on for them – and their parents!
